WITH OCEANSIDE COASTAL EXPEDITIONS

Published: September 2, 2026

O’side looks a little different from out here! Head offshore with Oceanside Coastal Expeditions on a Zodiac-style boat for an action packed adventure across Southern California waters. With 360-degree views and plenty of open ocean to explore, the thrill is as much in the journey as what you discover along the way!

built for ADventure

What makes Oceanside Coastal Expeditions special is that the adventure starts the moment you leave the harbor. Their rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) are Zodiac-style vessels built for stability, speed, and maneuverability, putting you close to the water with 360-degree views of the open Pacific.

With just 12 passengers aboard, it feels less like a tour and more like joining your captain on an ocean expedition. The boat can cover water quickly, following signs of activity, exploring the coastline and heading farther offshore to see what the day brings. You feel the boat move across the swells, the ocean spray in the air and just how vast the Pacific becomes as the coastline gets smaller behind you.

Of course, the wildlife makes the ride even better. When dolphins find the boat, they may race alongside it, surf the wake and appear just feet from your seat. Whales, sharks and other marine life are also known to make an appearance, but there’s no set script. Part of the fun is the search itself and never knowing what might pop up next.

The Thrill is In the Search

Part of the adventure is learning what to look for along the way. As you travel south, your captain points out areas around South Ponto, Terramar and the Carlsbad Canyons, where underwater geography, plankton and schools of anchovies support a much larger marine ecosystem. Where there’s food, wildlife may not be far behind.

Along the way, the trip becomes a floating marine biology lesson. Learn how dolphins communicate through signature whistles, how calves stay close to mom during their first year and how tiny plankton help support an entire ecosystem. As you follow the clues and scan the horizon for that first fin or blow, you start seeing Southern California’s ocean in a whole new way.

WHAT’S SWIMMING WHEN:

Summer: Common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, blue whales and minke whales.

Fall: All four local dolphin species, plus humpback, fin and minke whales.

Winter: Gray and fin whales, Pacific white sided dolphins and common dolphins.

Spring: All four local dolphin species, plus fin, minke and humpback whales.

Bring Your Crew

Want the adventure all to yourself? Private charters give your group the entire Zodiac style boat to search for whales and dolphins, cruise the coastline or celebrate something special. With up to 12 passengers, it’s an O’riginal adventure for families,  groups and anyone looking to make their time in Oceanside even more memorable.

CAPTAIN'S LOG

Take it from Captain Nathan: A breakfast burrito or Cuban omelet from Stratford at the Harbor is the perfect pre or post expedition fuel.

Bring sunglasses, sunscreen and a layer. Even on a warm O’side day, it can get chilly once you pick up speed on the open water. Most guests stay dry, although a little ocean spray is always possible depending on conditions and dolphins playing! Check out the FAQs for more tips on what to expect before you book your trip offshore.
