Plan your race-cation

Your race-cation is going to be legendary, and we know that the right food is key to your success. Whether you’re sourcing your race day ammunition or getting a family dinner with the crew, we know that your fuel is important. That’s why we’ve mapped out an itinerary that will satisfy both your racing appetite and your need for family fun!

A stop at Bound Coffee Company (right next to PlayTri Bike Shop) along your Coast Highway warm-up route will get you caffeinated while you tend to your bike shop needs. Once you’re stationed, Dine O’side with a carb-loaded breakfast of your choice from traditional cafes like Beach Break Cafe and Don’s Country Kitchen to superfood spots like Swami’s Cafe and Roots Craft Juice. No matter how you choose to fuel up, it’s sure to refuel both body and soul!

Looking to keep your family active and entertained leading up to race day? There are a number of reasons to visit Oceanside before the big day.

One of the most popular activities is to participate in the IRONKIDS Fun Run. This event is for ages 1-17 who want to test their mettle against other young athletes. It’s a great way for kids to get involved with IRONMAN and be inspired by the excitement of competition.

If you’d rather capture some indoor time, VITAL Climbing Gym offers bouldering day passes for families interested in trying something new. The gym has padded floors inside and offers climbing shoes for rent so that everyone can have a comfortable and fun experience reaching new heights.

If spinning is more your style, VERVE Studios offers an outdoor spin experience combining rhythm-based choreography, high-intensity intervals and even upper-body strength training guaranteeing a super fun and sweaty workout for any level rider—even if they’re not into triathlons!

During the race

Download the Oceanside Spectator Guide for the best locations to cheer on your athlete, event schedule, parking and more race day tips!

The Swim

Push through the waves from a rolling start corral on the beach to start the 1.2-mile swim in the salt water. Once past the break, the course will take racers into the harbor, then south towards the harbor boat dock.

Best Place To Watch: The beach side of transition, around the north end to the sidewalk areas of the harbor view. Be sure to stop by Harbor Pelican! Click here to see the Swim Course Map

The Bike

The bike course takes athletes from beautiful Oceanside Harbor through Camp Pendleton, an active military base. This area will give athletes a taste of what Southern California’s true beauty entails. After the first 20 miles, athletes leave the coast to head inland. These athletes face the San Mateo Hill and 2 other climbs that will test you both physically and mentally. The final few miles are flat but are usually greeted with a headwind as you head towards the Oceanside Harbor to start the run course.

Best Place To Watch: The majority of the bike course is on Camp Pendleton and is not accessible. View the transition area along Harbor Drive or download the IRONMAN tracker to watch live.  Click here to see the Bike Course Map

The Run

The two-loop run portion is considered flat and fast but be prepared for the turns and inclines/declines as you go from beach level to street level.

The two-loop, 13.1-mile run course begins at Transition above the Oceanside Pier, down onto the Harbor, on The Strand and through coastal neighborhoods before a spectacular finish.

Best Place To Watch: View athletes heading in and out of transition. It is then a 1-mile walk to the pier/finish line. Walk on the sidewalk at Strand/ Boardwalk to walk part of the run course. Click here to view the Run Course Map.

Tracking your athlete: Athlete tracking is only available on race day. Click below to download the IRONMAN Tracker.
