10 Reasons to Visit Oceanside in 2019
Did you know January 29th was National Plan for Vacation Day? With a fresh year underway, now is the perfect time to start planning for something to look forward to. With freezing temperatures spreading across the country, a coastal getaway is just what the doctor ordered! With beautiful year-round weather, a stunning coastline, the largest wooden pier on the West Coast, a quaint New England-style harbor and world class surf, Oceanside certainly has a lot to offer. But as they say, a new year means a new and improved you, and that sentiment is no different for the City of Oceanside. 2019 brings an historic hotel, new restaurants and wine bars, thrilling new experiences, family-friendly activities, and stunning beaches with even more on the horizon. Don’t miss out! Now is the time to begin planning that unforgettable trip to Oceanside!
Check out these 10 reasons you’ll want to make Oceanside a bucket list destination for 2019.
Historical Hotels – The Fin Hotel
One of the most exciting developments in Oceanside is the revitalization and preservation of historical buildings, many dating back a century! One such example is the iconic Dolphin Hotel, which originally opened in 1927. The original Dolphin Hotel touted celebrity guests throughout the 1930’s and 40’s until it began to fall into disrepair. Fast forward to 2018, the building underwent extensive internal remodeling and renovations and opening once more as a boutique 27-room hotel aptly named The Fin Hotel. The building’s tasteful blend of contemporary and historical charm can be seen in the lobby, where clean modern décor is paired with the fully restored original multi-colored mosaic tile flooring, grand wooden-railed staircase and tiffany windows.
Exciting New Restaurants – Exhale, Ramen MENMA, The Plot, Blade 1936
Calling all foodies, Oceanside’s booming restaurant scene is about to get even better! In addition to the already fantastic and award winning restaurants, such as San Diego Eater’s 2018 Restaurant of the Year Dija Mara, several new establishments are gearing up to make a splash. One such example is the newest creation from famed Local Tap House (LTH) and Kitchen Chef Daniel Pundik called Exhale Oceanside. With the slogan “The Tortilla is our Canvas,” Exhale blends traditional BBQ style wood fire cooking with Mexican flavors for a truly unique eating experience.
Another restaurant fresh on the scene, Ramen MENMA will bring the end to your search for the perfect ramen! Master Chef Ryuichiro Shinagawa, winner of the prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand award four years in a row, has brought his talents to the US for the first time by opening his restaurant in Oceanside. Here you can expect handcrafted gourmet ramen with unique flavor profiles that will keep you coming back for more.
Other exciting new restaurants that are slated to open this year include The Plot, a new plant based—no waste creation by local restaurateurs Davin and Jessica Waite of Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub and The Whet Noodle. In addition to Blade 1936, a modern Italian restaurant whose name gives homage to it’s Irving Gill designed building which previously housed the Blade-Tribune newspaper.
Awesome Surf Contests
Surfing continues to be a key component of Oceanside’s heritage and culture with numerous local hot spots like North Harbor Beach and the Pier featuring some of the best and most consistent waves around. So much so that Oceanside is more than just a surfing destination for enthusiasts, it is the host for numerous surfing contests throughout the year.
Wine Bars Along the Coast – Orfila Vineyards & Winery
New for 2019, Orfila Vineyards & Winery has opened a tasting room in downtown Oceanside. Located a short walk from the pier and beach sand, Orfila’s tasting room offers a plethora of award-winning wines to try. In addition, Executive Chef Luke Morganstern will be creating a variety of delicious small plates crafted from locally sourced products to pair with their extensive wine tasting list.
Shop and Walk – South O Walkabout
South Oceanside, or more commonly referred to as South O, is a charming neighborhood of Oceanside known for its unique personality and wonderful businesses district. Having recently undergone a revitalization, South O features many new restaurants, collaborative artisan retail spaces, and nightly entertainment that perfectly coincide with the unique vibe of the area.
The locally organized South O Walkabout is a great way to experience everything South O has to offer. The participating businesses stay open late, host unique in-shop experiences and lively entertainment to further enhance the overall shopping and dining atmosphere. The Walkabout is held quarterly on the second Wednesday of the month from 5-8pm. The 2019 event dates include February 13th, May 8th, August 14th, and December 11th.
