January Oceanside Events
After the hustle and bustle of a busy holiday season, start the new year off right with these fun events and activities planned throughout the city. From the WSL Sambazon World Junior Championships at the Oceanside Pier and Candlelight Concerts to O’side Mardi Gras and an exclusive Stephen King reunion, Oceanside is the place to be for the start of the new year! What: The field will feature the world’s best up-and-coming surfers aged 20-and-under, from each of the WSL’s seven regions. Only one woman and one man will emerge victorious, claiming the 2023 World Junior Champion Titles. The event waiting period opens on January 9 and holds a competition window through January 14, 2024. The men’s and the women’s fields will each feature 24 surfers, comprised of two regional qualifiers from each of the WSL’s seven regions and 10 wildcards selected by the WSL Tours and Competition team. The 2023 World Junior Champions, who will be decided by this competition, will also secure spots on the 2024 Challenger Series, giving them the opportunity to further showcase their talent on a global stage.

What: The Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon & Half Marathon is an annual North County event occurring in January. Over 10,000 runners and walkers from all over the United States and many foreign countries are expected to participate in the race weekend festivities. The 26.2 and 13.1 mile courses will feature tours through Carlsbad Village, along oceanfront Pacific Coast Highway and past sandy beaches and picturesque lagoons. Participants are sure to stay motivated and entertained with support stations and live bands every mile, spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and thousands of spectators and volunteers lining the course.

What: Trying to get your Mardi Gras on, but can’t make it to New Orleans? Don’t worry. Oceanside has you covered. We’re bringing a new, lively spirit of Mardi Gras to our city during the month of January leading up to Fat Tuesday (February 13). Downtown O’side businesses will be creating an experience within their establishments that reflect the Mardi Gras/Carnival experience—you know, plenty of food and drinks, jazz music playing in the background, colorful decorations and Big Easy themed events splashed around the calendar.
