In Oceanside, fresh seafood isn’t just what’s on the menu. It’s part of the city’s connection to the Pacific. From fishing boats heading out of Oceanside Harbor to local fishermen bringing in their daily catch, the seafood scene starts right at the docks. Whether you’re casting a line, shopping for fresh-off-the-boat seafood or letting O’side chefs work their magic, there are plenty of ways to experience the local catch!

Want to experience the catch firsthand? Start with Oceanside SEA Center, where sportfishing trips depart from Oceanside Harbor for adventures on the Pacific. From half-day fishing excursions perfect for beginners to full-day trips for more experienced anglers, there’s an adventure for every level. The catch changes with the season and conditions, with opportunities to reel in rockfish, bass, yellowtail, tuna and more. No gear? No problem. The SEA Center offers equipment rentals, tackle and everything you need to get started.
October also marks the start of California spiny lobster season, a highly anticipated time for local fishermen and chefs. Prized for their sweet, tender meat, these clawless crustaceans are a Southern California delicacy that makes their way from Oceanside’s waters to local seafood markets and seasonal restaurant menus throughout fall and winter.
There’s no better place to meet the people behind your seafood than the Fishermen’s Market of North County, held every Sunday from 8 am to 2 pm at Oceanside Harbor. Named “Best Spot to Score Fresh Fish” by San Diego Magazine, this open-air market connects local fishermen directly with customers, offering catches fresh from the ocean within the last 72 hours. Shop seasonal favorites like rockfish, tuna, halibut, swordfish, sea urchin and spiny lobster. Chat with the fishermen, pick up the day’s catch and catch occasional cooking demonstrations from Wrench & Rodent chef Davin Waite, showcasing creative ways to prepare fresh seafood.
Seasonal Recipe: Bring a taste of O’side home with the Fishermen’s Market’s Spiny Lobster Pumpkin Bisque recipe, a delicious seasonal twist on this local delicacy.
For fresh fish beyond Sunday, stop by Harbor Pelican Deli Mart and Fish Market. This family-run gem has been rooted in Oceanside’s fishing community for over 50 years. Owner Onofrio D’Amato grew up commercial fishing before combining his fishing operation with the Oceanside Harbor Fuel Dock and Mini Mart. Today, the family sells seafood from its own commercial boats directly to locals, visitors and restaurants. Pick up fresh fish to cook at your vacation rental, or grab a loaded deli sandwich and their beloved ceviche while watching the boats bob in the harbor.
