scary good events this october

Halloween hits differently with the Pacific as your backdrop. In Oceanside, spooky season gets a creative, coastal twist with pumpkin patches, Día de los Muertos celebrations, art parties, trick-or-treating and reportedly haunted landmarks.

From family fun to after-dark adventures, Halloween in O’side is anything but ordinary.

Where Halloween Gets Surreal

ART AFTER DARK

If Halloween is an excuse to become someone—or something—else for the night, start at the Oceanside Museum of Art.

On October 24, 2026, Art After Dark: Anatomy of the Surreal transforms the museum into an immersive Halloween experience inspired by David Adey’s Sacrificial Bodies exhibition. The 21+ evening brings together art, fashion, performances, libations and one of North County’s biggest costume competitions.

And this isn’t the kind of party where a last-minute costume will necessarily do. Guests can compete for prizes in categories including Best Upcycled Design, Best Interpretation of the David Adey exhibition and Best Interpretation of the Anatomy of the Surreal theme.

Come prepared to embrace the uncanny, the unexpected and the wonderfully weird.

Experience Día de los Muertos

Halloween weekend also offers a chance to experience a celebration rooted in culture, remembrance and tradition. Now in its 25th year, the annual Día de los Muertos Festival brings the community together in Downtown Oceanside on Sunday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., to honor loved ones and celebrate Mexican heritage.

Colorful altars adorned with locally grown marigolds, a chalk cemetery, live music, a car show and more fill the downtown streets. It’s a vibrant reminder that this time of year can be about more than costumes and candy—it can also be about art, family, memory and community.

Find Fall at Mellano Farms

A century-old family farm might not be the first place you’d expect to find in a Southern California beach town, but that’s part of what makes Oceanside’s fall season so O’riginal.

Every Saturday and Sunday in October, Mellano Farms hosts its Pumpkin & Marigold Fall Festival, where visitors can pick out a pumpkin, explore a corn maze and wander through rows of brilliant marigolds from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

It’s classic fall fun with a coastal twist—and a colorful backdrop for those quintessential Halloween photos.

Get Spooky at the Haunted Market

For a family-friendly Halloween night, head downtown for the Haunted Market at Oceanside’s beloved Sunset Market.

On Thursday, October 29, from 5 to 9 p.m., Pier View Way and Coast Highway get a spooky makeover with trick-or-treating, a costume parade and costume contests. Grab dinner from a local vendor, put the kids in costume (or join them yourself) and make an evening of it. It’s less about elaborate attractions and more about what Oceanside does best: bringing people together for a good time.

Go Looking for Ghosts

Think Oceanside is all sunshine and surf? Think again. Once the sun goes down, the city has a few stories of its own to tell. Historic buildings and longtime local landmarks are connected to reports of paranormal activity and unexplained happenings, making a self-guided ghost hunt an easy way to add some chills to your Halloween weekend.

Explore five haunted spots in Oceanside and see if you can uncover some of the city’s more mysterious—and possibly supernatural—stories.

Make It a Coastal Halloween Getaway

The best part about Halloween in Oceanside? You don’t have to celebrate it just one way.

Pick pumpkins and wander a corn maze. Experience the traditions of Día de los Muertos. Dress up for surreal art and outrageous costumes. Trick-or-treat downtown. Then, as the sun sets over the Pacific, see if you’re brave enough to go looking for ghosts.

It’s where art meets culture and spooky meets the sea. A little weird. A little unexpected. And completely O’riginal.
