The Best Activities to Do in Oceanside in the Spring

Tips and suggestions from the volunteers at the California Welcome Center-Oceanside.

Spring is a particularly beautiful time in Oceanside to explore our trails, check out striking local art, watch the beach gardens blossom and have a picnic under the sun. During this season the North County area is a truly special place that comes alive with celebrations and events you won’t want to miss, and no shortage of fantastic local restaurants to spend that extra hour of daylight at.

The California Welcome Center is a great resource to visitors and locals alike, providing helpful information on top of things to do in Oceanside and around the state. Staffed by volunteers that are passionate and knowledgeable about all things Oceanside, check out a few of their favorite things to recommend to do during this vibrant spring season!

What are Your Favorite Things to do in the Spring Time?

“It is nice to do some early morning bicycling during the spring. I try to beat the crowds, and get in a trip around Downtown Oceanside or along the San Luis Rey River Trail before it begins to warm up. I also find it to be a nice time of the year to engage in the art classes that are offered through MiraCosta College.” – Dwight J.

“Drive up anytime to Julian from mid-March thru June for the most beautiful display of spring flowers including daffodils, flowering apple trees, lilacs and peonies while each in their blooming season. Almost like being in the northeast states during spring after their harsh winters. And, of course, the ‘piece de resistance’ at the end of your journey is a lavish slice of Julian apple pie. Fun and yum in one round trip!” – Denise D.

“The gardens in Balboa Park are spectacular! We just visited the Japanese Friendship Garden and the cherry blossoms will be alive in March!” – Tanya C.

“The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are lovely, great to take children! They have large cart rides that can take you around to see an expanse of colors.” – Lynn M.

Best Spots in Oceanside for a Picnic?

“I like to pick up breakfast or lunch at Buccaneer Café, then go over to their park for a picnic. Quality food and great location- with free parking which is important!” – Denise D.

“The best park I enjoy in Oceanside to have a picnic is Buddy Todd Park. It is easy to get around, small enough for a great walk, dogs can run free, and you can relax with a good BBQ. I like bringing my potato salad to the picnics and parties my husband and I attend there.” – Hue L.

“There are many spots by the harbor to bring a lunch basket from home or stop at one of our local markets. I like to go for a sandwich, made to order and a bakery sweet. It’s a perfect place to watch the various boats and seals pass by.” – Lynn M.

“The Mission San Luis Rey is one of the best spots in Oceanside to bring out a light lunch and enjoy the historic surroundings.” – Stephen V.

Best Indoor/Outdoor Restaurants in Oceanside?

Masters Kitchen and Cocktail is my favorite indoor/ outdoor dining restaurant. They have a very lively and energetic atmosphere, full of laughs and good times. They also have live music, which is extremely fun and great for just a nice spring night out. I enjoy their desserts! They are a must try on the menu for sure!! They usually incorporate fresh fruit from our own Cyclops Farms.” – Kelli V.

Dominic’s at the Harbor is my go-to! I normally like to order up a pizza, which is easy to share! I like being able to sit on the outdoor patio directly on the harbor. Then strolling over to Nautical Bean for a coffee afterwards.” – D. Quinn

333 Pacific always has great food, service is excellent and you can’t beat the location right on the water and the Oceanside Pier. Try out the Chicken Lettuce Wraps and Calamari to start your meal off right!” – Connie G.

LTH has fantastic food and seating inside or out. And everyone’s favorite is the Oceanside Broiler for a relaxing view of the harbor.” – Tanya C.
