The Oceanside Intl. Film Festival continues on Monday, August 7th with its first official day of screenings at the Sunshine Brooks Theatre. Golden Ticket (6:11pm, Oceanside Spotlight Contest): A short comedy that proves even the gods love cupcakes! Plain English (6:13pm, Oceanside Premiere): A short TV format mockumentary web series that occurs in a basement caretaker’s room that has been turned into a classroom theater. The series is about Jacob English and his friend Brandon who decide to start a drama club thus bringing together a cast of characters and their comedic interactions as they study drama and work to put on a play. Christmas Break (6:21pm, California Premiere): This short animation takes place early on Christmas morning where everything seemed perfect. Too Perfect… A Boy & His Beast (6:23pm, San Diego Premiere): An animation about a young boy that must stop a creature that is terrorizing the countryside in 18th century France; But is it possible that he may be to blame for the beast itself? Be (6:32pm, US Premiere) In this breathtaking inspirational short, neither Caco’s physical limitations nor his overprotective parents can stop him from setting off on a river adventure even though he has no idea where it will take him. ENVIRONMENTAL SCREENING BLOCK –Temple of the Ghost Own (6:52pm, World Premiere): Hidden in the forests and meadows of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, one of the most sensitive and sought-after bird species finds what some consider its last refuge. The Great Gray Owl is a mysterious yet hallowed member of the ecology, but only a few hundred still call the mountains home. When a young owl named Tokori has his home impacted by a historically large fire season, he is caught in the middle of a landmark political controversy over logging burnt habitat. SOS: Salton Sea Walk (7:13pm, World Premiere): The Salton Sea, California’s largest lake, is rapidly drying up. After 2017, the largest rural to urban water transfer will exponentially accelerate the rate at which the sea shrinks, exposing acres of dried lakebed. The exposed playa, containing 100 years worth of farm chemicals, could become airborne, sending billowing clouds of toxic dust towards major population centers in the Southwest. Randy Brown, community activist, set out to do something no one had ever attempted — to walk the entire shoreline of the sea. In June of 2015, with temperatures reaching 120 degrees, he set out on his 6 day, 115 mile journey. His mission — to raise awareness for the sea, a forgotten place of extraordinary beauty, silently threatening to make itself known once again. Will the people be inspired to save it before it’s too late? METAPHYSICAL DRAMA SCREENING BLOCK (MATURE AUDIENCE WARNING) – Four of a Kind (8:29pm): Two couples at opposite ends of their relationship must overcome their differences in a stalled elevator. The Big Three (8:40pm, World Premiere): The Big Three is a moving story about race, religion, and politics that revolves around a gang of diverse criminal friends as well as a cop and his daughter. The Pirate Captain Toledano (8:55pm, San Diego Premiere): When the Pirate Captain Toledano interrogates a stowaway on his ship, he finds that the young man is a refugee from the Spanish Inquisition. The stowaway wants to become a pirate to plunder Spanish ships. The Captain must decide whether to make the stowaway a pirate, or to make him walk the plank. The Book of Judith (9:05pm, Oceanside Premiere): A horrific secret shared by two young girls leads one of them down a tragic path, as she seeks a solution based upon a misconception. This film explores the raw power of belief and the unintended consequences that it can have on both individuals and society when not guided by wisdom and benevolence. Academy of Eden (9:19pm, World Premiere): A down and out teenager must decide between conformity and rebellion when his parents send him to The Academy of Eden, a boarding school for troubled teens that resorts to barbaric tactics to elicit obedience from students. Things become complicated when Daniel falls for a fellow student, Amanda, at a school where romantic relations are strictly prohibited. Philosophy 101 (9:36pm, San Diego Premiere): A college student begins to suspect that his Philosophy Professor may need a reality check.
