Plan to Dream your Dream Wedding

Congratulations on your engagement! Now what? Most wedding planning websites will present you with an ominous twelve month checklist and send you on your way. However, there is a step between your engagement and your wedding planning.
You’ve updated your Facebook relationship status.
You’ve IG’d That Ring. #engagementring
GREAT!…Now it’s time to Plan… BUT WAIT!
As I’m sure you know, everyone has an opinion on where to get married, what to wear, how much to spend, who to invite; it’s quite overwhelming really. You’ll hear more opinions than you’ll know what to do with so before you get distracted by everyone’s thoughts and ideas, know your own mind and create your plan. I don’t mean go to Pinterest and grab things that someone else has done. You need to clear your mind, dig deep into your heart of hearts and visualize what you want. You need a Plan to Dream your Dream Wedding.
Here are some questions that you might want to ask yourself:
Is bigger always better or is small and intimate the way to go?
Sweet and subdued or the party don’t stop?
Are you inspired by the beauty of the outdoors or is inside with draping and dramatic lighting more your style?
Are religious or cultural aspects important?
DJ or live band?
Designer details or DIY?
Oh, and don’t forget to ask your betrothed; their dreams matter too and hopefully you have similar tastes. Of course expense may be a factor and you’ll need to eventually weigh out the pros and cons of your dream versus the budget reality, but your Dream Plan will help you narrow down your non-negotiables.
With your Dream Plan in hand, NOW you can start your Pinterest board and build your wedding based on what you jotted down.
Turning your Dream into a Reality
I don’t recommend going at this alone. Wedding planning takes a village. Here are my recommendations for where to get help.
Friends / Family
Your friends and family are going to want to help. It’s natural, they love you. They can also make you want to tear your hair out and gouge out your eye-balls. So choose carefully who does what with you and who’s opinion is really going to matter. You’re going to offend someone at some point so why worry about it. Just remember that those that are paying for things will want a say on how it’s spent. Just know, live it, love it.
Speaking of paying for things, here is a little tip. If a family member or friend offers to pay for something, like your cake, make sure they give you their budget for this. Their idea of how much a cake cost 30 years ago may be out of line with the fondant custom creation of your dreams. You need to have those difficult conversations so there are no surprises.

Another great place to seek out free planning assistance is with your venue, if you’ve already selected one. Catering Sales Managers at venues do this for a living and see the good and the bad when it comes to wedding vendors. They also may have deals set up with their favorite wedding professionals where their clients receive DISCOUNTS because they were referred by the venue! It doesn’t hurt to ask. Several venues will even include a wedding coordinator. If they do, be sure to ask what services they specifically supply so you’re not surprised the day of. (VERY IMPORTANT)
Independent Professional Assistance
If you have the means, I highly recommend hiring a professional wedding planner. They can save you time and money through their referral systems and will become your best friend on your wedding day. To be able to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor and not stress over every detail is worth its weight in gold! Wedding coordinators offer a variety of services from day-of coordinating to all-out event design. Be sure to select someone based on the services that you require.
Make sure you keep your Dream Plan handy and refer to it often. It’s easy to get off track. Don’t make the mistake that I did. My wedding was a hodge-podge of everyone else’s wedding and while it turned out beautiful and everyone had a good time, I never felt like it ended up being a reflection of who we were. Can I get a do-over? Vow Renewal?
