Racing for Good with Race Across America
Race Across America (RAAM) begins in Oceanside, CA on June 10th for solo riders and June 14th for teams. The race brings national attention which participants use as a platform to raise money for a charity or a cause that they’re passionate about. Race Across America annually raises more than $2 million in funds. Here are just a few of the teams and their causes.
2x Motocross Champion, Supermoto Champion and Pikes Peak Hill Climb record holder, Micky Dymond, 7x US National Time Trial Champion and Tour de France competitor, Dave Zabriskie, BMX Champion and 24x X Games medalist, Dave Mirra, and finally Superbike Champion, Supermoto Champion and professional mountain bike racer, Ben Bostrom, will take on the country as Team Legends of The Road. The talent of all four seasoned athletes makes for the perfect recipe to race RAAM. Teammate Dave Zabriskie has a passion for educating and bringing awareness to safety on the road between cyclists and vehicles. His organization Yield to Life will be the charitable beneficiary for the team. Goal: $20,000
2014 RAAM 4-Rider Team Winners!!!
This 8 Person team hails mostly from the United Kingdom, but also includes a rider from France and Sweden. Pippa Middleton, sister of the Duchess of Cambridge, and her brother James are part of this team to raise money for the Michael Matthews Foundation, a childhood education nonprofit, and also for the British Heart Foundation.
Ten bike riders and two drivers, all members of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity from Western Kentucky University are riding to raise funds for the BrightFocus Foundation’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Program. Goal: $100,000
This 8-rider team from Georgia is raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training. Their crew is made up entirely of people who are dedicated to the LLS cause. Some of them have lost family members, some are survivors themselves and some are battling their cancer right now. They are united in their commitment to finding a cure for these blood cancers and contributing to the long run defeat of cancers of all kinds. Goal: $250,000
Derek “Koz” Kozlowski of Dalton, Georgia is riding to support the Boys & Girls Clubs serving Chattooga, Gordon, Murray, & Whitfield Counties, and their mountain bike program. Some of Derek’s earliest, and best, memories are of riding his bike with his brother and sister. When they were out riding, the world just faded away. And now, Derek wants to give the kids of the Boys and Girls Club the same opportunity. Goal: $100,000
Debbie and Bill Albers of Healdsburg, CA will compete as a 2-person relay to raise awareness and funds for The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF). NFFF’s mission is to honor and remember America’s fallen fire heroes and to provide resources to assist their survivors in rebuilding their lives and work within the Fire Service Community to reduce firefighter deaths.
The youngest RAAM team, including two high school sophomore students and two university students from the state of Washington, plan to raise awareness and funds for the research and development of new treatments happening at the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research in Seattle, WA. The team believes that childhood cancer can be cured and should not stop children from doing the things they love to do.
An 8-rider New York based team, formed by Winston Fisher and Evan Marks, is raising money for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. The organization, founded by Fisher’s great grandfather, is building a set of nine medical diagnostic and treatment centers to help wounded military heroes returning from Iraq and Afghanistan who are suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress (PTS). Goal $250,000
Team Joe Barr from Derry in Northern Ireland is raising money to expand Hopecam from the US to Ireland so that children across the island of Ireland can overcome the social isolation they experience during cancer treatment, using technology to connect with their friends at school.
