California’s first ecological reserve, the Buena Vista Lagoon holds 223 acres of wetlands located in the cities of Oceanside and Carlsbad. The lagoon is home to about 103 bird species, 18 different mammals, as well as 14 amphibians and reptiles. Take a stroll and stop in the nature center to enjoy, observe, and learn about California’s wetland creatures.

Located in a secluded valley, the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is the perfect place for a daytime retreat. With beautiful grounds surrounding the Spanish-style mission, try bringing a picnic to enjoy in the grass, wandering the paths to attractions within the mission, or reflecting in the peaceful garden areas.
Harbor Beach’s wide, sandy area makes it a great place to walk, jog, sunbathe, or play with the kids. The beach features picnic areas and volleyball courts to enjoy some food and fun on the sand. There are also fire pits to roast hot dogs or s’mores, and great spots for surfing and fishing. Fly a kite, watch a sunset, or walk to the harbor to dine and watch the boats!
Guajome County Park
Visit this park for a nice morning run or stay a little longer at the campsite for a night or two! This quaint park is great to pass some relaxing moments enjoying some flora and fauna by the lake. The park also offers bike trails, and dogs are welcome on leashes.
Built in 1976 as a symbol of Oceanside’s heritage, Heritage Park is like stepping back in time to historic Oceanside. Enjoy the gazebo and the beautiful lawn for a stroll, or have lunch at the picnic tables.
The San Luis Rey River Trail is a Class I bicycle, pedestrian, and skating trail. Stretching 7.2 miles one way, the trail follows the path to the San Luis Rey River. Walk, jog, hike, bike, or skate: the San Luis Rey River Trail is great for it all! Dogs are welcome on leashes and transportation is close by at the Oceanside Transit Center.
