Vegan Delights in Oceanside

Craving scrumptious vegan dining options in town? Oceanside restaurants continue to expand their menus to offer healthy plant-based dining. Check out the eateries below and their diverse epicurean dishes.

Rim Talay

Located blocks from the ocean on Mission Ave, Rim Talay means by the sea. Here you’ll find healthy, authentic Thai cuisine. You can order an astounding 90% of the menu vegan or vegetarian. Dine alfresco in the outdoor patio. Sit inside for a more serene experience. Imported artwork and a feng shui bubbling fountain decorate the dining room.

Start with the tasty Fresh Rolls. The rice paper wrapped veggie-mint-tofu treats come with a tangy peanut sauce. For a super bargain, try a vegan lunch combo with tofu or vegetables for under $10. These come with your choice of entrée, spring roll, rice and a mixed salad. Popular options include the Pad Thai and Yellow Curry. The first dish combines scallions, peanuts and carrots with pleasing pan-fried rice noodles. Rich coconut cream enhances the curry served with steaming jasmine rice.

To drink try the Thai iced tea or coffee with or without boba. You can even indulge in a vegan Singha Thai Beer.

The Plot

Calling all foodies, Oceanside’s booming restaurant scene has a new addition! The Plot, a plant based—no waste creation by local restaurateurs Davin and Jessica Waite of Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub and The Whet Noodle.

Meet The Plot: a lively, inviting restaurant chain. We make delicious, high-quality, and sometimes boundary-pushing food that is completely plant-based. A conscientious business with operations that benefit their team, the health of our communities and the future of our planet.

The Whet Noodle

Chef Davin and Jessica Waite opened Wrench and Rodent Seabasstropub in 2013. The South Oceanside sushi joint soon developed a loyal clientele. A few years later, the foodie couple launched the complementary Whet Noodle next door. At both spots, the Waites apply their passion for sourcing local, sustainable ingredients. They use zero waste business practices too.

The Whet Noodle serves innovative ramen and Japanese inspired shared plates. Enjoy casual counter service and an eclectic vibe. Sit in the fun dining room punctuated by graffiti, paper lanterns and crimson walls. Prefer the outdoors? Head to the herb-filled back patio with string lighting and rustic picnic tables.

Try one of the vegan standouts such as the Hangry Vagan Ramen, Sweet Chili Tofu or Butter Lettuce Salad. The satisfying ramen pairs chewy made-to-order noodles with crispy tofu in a zesty hot and sour broth. For added punch, order spicy and/or garnish with garlic chips and roasted carrots. The Sweet Chili Tofu looks like a rainbow on a plate. Picture silky orange glazed tofu, vibrant stir-fried veggies and piping hot rice. All the super fresh salads incorporate produce picked from nearby farms. To drink choose from a nice selection of sake, beer or local Living Tea Kombucha. To finish, don’t miss out on a decadent vegan bundt cake or cupcake from Oceanside’s Snopel’s Bakery.

Harney Sushi

Find Harney Sushi downtown near the iconic Oceanside Pier. The restaurant features sustainable sushi and locally sourced produce. Savor plentiful gourmet specialty rolls including select vegan and vegetarian options. A gurgling fish tank and vibrant mural embellish the modern dining room.

Try the bestselling The Spicy Juan roll. Think wholesome veggies such as broccoli and sweet potato topped with a zesty lime hot sauce. The Vegan Rainbow mixes vegetables, fruits and umami eel sauce.  Quinoa stars in the new “Quinoa” I Mean roll drizzled with a cilantro lime sauce.  Sweet sesame dressing balances the brininess of the nutritious seaweed Chuka Salad. For more greens, try the Farmers Market Salad with arugula and frisee tossed in fruity vinaigrette.

Harney serves sake, wine and beers. You can enjoy happy hour specials throughout the week and live music on Thursdays from 6:30-9:30pm.
