12th Annual Dia de los Muertos, Sunday, October 28, 2012

Dia de los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead,” is an all-day, free family event taking place on Sunday, October 28from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Oceanside’s historic Mission San Luis Rey. Dia de los Muertos is a special event with diverse cultural traditions, remembering and honoring deceased loved ones. The largest festival of its kind in San Diego County, the Mission will come alive with entertainment, carnival rides and vendors. Children will be entertained with a variety of craft activities and exciting carnival rides. The entire family will enjoy 75 diverse vendors, traditional food, chalk cemetery and a classic car show showcasing trunk altars put on by the Por Siempre Car Club. Bike the Coast-Taste The Coast, November 3, 2012

As San Diego’s only Bike Friendly designated community by the League of American Bicyclists, Bike the Coast-Taste the Coast is ideally suited to Oceanside. Bikers of all ages and skill levels can participate in the event, which offers five out-and-back routes ranging from 7 miles to 100 miles. The relatively flat, 7-mile route along the San Luis Rey Bike Trail is the most family-friendly ride. All routes finish back at the Oceanside Pier, where the Taste the Coast Festival and Expo portion of the event takes place and features food booths and fun activities for the family.

Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot

Oceanside’s official kick off to the holiday season starts with the annual Pacific Marine Credit Union O’side Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. Now in its 6th year, the event is a family affair that benefits Oceanside schools and charities. Races include a 5 Mile, 5K and a 1-mile kid’s course. Oceanside Parade of Lights
December 10, 2011, 6-9 p.m.
Fishing boats, sail boats, yachts, kayaks and dingys dress up in holiday swag and circle the Oceanside Harbor to enchant onlookers at the harbor, restaurants and beach. Many of the boats feature people dressed up like Santa waving to the crowd. One of the best viewing spots is along the side of the Oceanside Harbor near the fishing dock and police station. From this vantage point, you can see the parade twice. The concrete walkway that surrounds much of the harbor is also good for spectating the event. Harbor Village at North Harbor has shops, dining, and seating areas.

Holiday Sunset Market
Thursdays in December, 5-9 p.m.
The Sunset Market kicks off the holiday season in style with the City of Oceanside’s grand Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony on December 1 at 6:00 p.m. Santa will arrive on a fire engine and cookies and milk will be served. During all five Thursdays in December, shoppers at the Sunset Market will be treated to the Downtown Holiday Gift Market with hundreds of unusual and exotic gift ideas from around the world. The Certified Farmers Market section features farm fresh produce and floral items plus a myriad of gourmet food items to take home for holiday parties. Strolling carolers add to the merriment. 333 Pacific restaurant in Oceanside has partnered with the Oceanside Museum of Art to present a dynamic jazz concert series featuring the region’s top jazz musicians, paired with gourmet appetizers, desserts and specialty wines. The concert on December 8 will be holiday themed and feature a performance by Izzy Chait. More Bike Trails

Oceanside has become even more bike friendly with the completion of a new trail from Wisconsin Avenue to Tyson Street. The new route will soon connect to a public trail project from Oceanside Boulevard to Tyson Street. Oceanside is the only city in San Diego County to be named a Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. With ample trails and great bus and rail connections, visitors can get anywhere in and through Oceanside by bike.

Sand Replenishment

Beach lovers will have more sand and wider beaches in Oceanside this spring thanks to SANDAG’s (San Diego Association of Governments) 2012 Regional Beach Sand Project that will place 1.4 million cubic yards of beach quality sand on regional beaches. The project began in early September and continues through October.

Oceanside, Calif. – November 30, 2011– Visit Oceanside Conference and Visitors Bureau has hired Dana Porter Higgins as senior sales manager. Higgins brings more than 15 years of experience in hospitality sales and marketing to her new role and will be responsible for overseeing all group sales efforts for the bureau.

Specializing in business development, event planning and client retention, her career history includes sales and marketing positions at Marbella Country Club, San Juan Capistrano; Visco Entertainment Group, San Diego; The University Club, San Diego; and The Meadows Del Mar.

Higgins attended Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI and holds a degree in hospitality management. A San Diego native, she currently resides in Oceanside with her family. In her free time, Higgins is a volunteer with the San Diego chapter of the American Cancer Society and is co-chair of its Associate Executive Partnership Council. Parade of Lights at Oceanside Harbor
Saturday, December 8, 2012
7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Fishing boats, sail boats, yachts, kayaks and dingys dress up in holiday swag and circle the Oceanside Harbor to enchant onlookers at the harbor, restaurants and beach. Many of the boats feature people dressed up like Santa waving to the crowd. One of the best viewing spots is along the side of the Oceanside Harbor near the fishing dock and police station. From this vantage point, you can see the parade twice.

Holiday Home Tour
Sunday, December 9, 2012
10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Friends of the Oceanside Public Library are pleased to present the annual Holiday Home Tour on Sunday, December 9, 2012 with self-guided tours taking place between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. This year’s event will feature five enchanting Oceanside homes festively decorated for the holidays.  The highlight will be two Roberts Cottages at one destination location.

Tour participants are invited to stop at the Civic Center Library, located at 330 North Coast Highway, for refreshments, a variety of holiday shopping opportunities at the better-than-ever Gift Boutique, and dancing and singing entertainment.  There will also be chances to win amazing auction prizes. Tickets are $20 each. They can be purchased at the Civic Center Library at 330 North Coast Highway or at the Mission Branch Library at 3861 Mission Avenue. Oceanside’s Secret Santa Project
