Liquid Capture: Masters of Underwater Photography
Don’t miss the Liquid Capture: Masters of Underwater Photography exhibit on display at the Oceanside Museum of Art from April 28, 2012- June 17, 2012.
Faced with constant challenges such as the absorption of light by water, distortion and light-reflecting particles, water pressure and an often monochromatic environment, underwater photography remains one of the most difficult forms of photography. The Oceanside Museum of Art celebrates this challenging medium with Liquid Capture: Masters of Underwater Photography, providing visitors a glimpse inside the vibrant ecosystems that lie beneath the ocean surface. This juried exhibition, organized by renowned photographer Lee Peterson, features 49 works by 25 different artists from around the world. The work on view invites viewers to take a fish’s view of the vast ocean, which has only been 3% explored underwater, and experience diverse life forms such as sea anemones, urchins, manta rays, sea squids and pygmy seahorses.

Cruisin’ Califas: The Art of Lowriding
Celebrate the exhibition opening of Cruisin’ Califas: The Art of Lowriding with a preview reception on May 12, 2012 from 5-7pm at the Oceanside Museum of Art.
The reception is complimentary for Oceanside Musuem of Art (OMA) members and $10 for non-members.
The personalized automobiles known as “Lowriders,” are part of a subculture whose aesthetic tendencies cross over into the world of fine art. Lowrider describes a car that is typically customized with a hydraulic setup to be low to the ground, with an elaborate paint job, striking chrome features and uniquely designed upholstery. But this term reaches beyond cars, and has become a cultural phenomenon and way of life for many people.
Today Lowrider culture can be seen not only in cars and motorcycles, but also in sculptures, photography and paintings as a way for people to express their individuality and cultural pride. This exhibition will feature a display of full-size cars, motorcycles and bicycles that have been created in the Lowrider style. Accompanying the vehicles will be paintings and sculptures made by the vehicle designers and owners and other prominent artists influenced by Lowrider culture in their artwork.
