Oceanside, Calif., Sept. 20, 2011 — The 4th Annual California Surf Festival, produced by and a benefit for the California Surf Museum, has a diverse array of films to excite and thrill both surfer and non-surfer alike.
The California Surf Festival highlights the culture of surfing’s lifestyle, and an important part of the culture is the music. What better way to start off the Festival on Thursday night than with the iconic ukulele, which has touched surfers through the years. The documentary The Mighty Uke will share the amazing phenomenon that the ukulele is taking over the world, one pluck of the strings at a time. We have planned a very special musical presentation following the screening – bring your uke along! You’ll learn that this fun and charming instrument has heart and soul and, most importantly, transcends boundaries. This is one instrument that always puts a smile on your face!
Friday night will be a special programming for “Chicks Who Rip Night,” featuring films by, for, and about, the ladies of surf. Mingle with our special guests, be a part of the USA premiere for Oceanides and watch footage of some of the hottest women surfers on the water today. This is the first surf festival to honor the ladies of surf with a full program.
Showing Saturday night, one of the major award-winning films screening in film festivals this year is The Still Point by Taki Bialeas. This French filmmaker, inspired by the work of T.S. Eliot, asks a cornucopia of surfers about their experience of what it is like to be in the still point of the water. The answers are insightful and thought provoking. Interviews with Mickey Muñoz, Tom Morey, Paul Strauch, Skip Frye, Jericho Poppler, Steve Pezman, Jeff Divine, Doc Paskowitz, George Downing and many more, have made this film intriguing and in demand!
Again this year, “Big Shorts From Little Groms” will be a highlight on closing day. Kids 18 and under are invited to make a short action sports film no longer than 5 minutes. The best films will screen and a panel of judges will present awards to the films, with an overall Festival Grom filmmaker winner. Lucky winners in the past have gone on to be hired by some of the largest surf companies in the world, with their job making films. What an awesome way to get a job — and cool prizes too!
On Sunday, the Silver Surfer Award presentation will take cap off this year’s Festival, with the award going to San Diego’s legendary surfer and shaper, Skip Frye. We’ll have many people from the community and surf industry honoring Skip for his contribution to surfing through the years. It will be a who’s who of surfing at this event — with photos, film and speakers to share Skip’s amazing life.
With premieres, receptions, special guests, excited groms, Chicks Who Rip and Skip Frye, the 4th Annual California Surf Festival will have something for everyone, and we hope to see you there!
