September is here, can you believe it? As school gets back in session and summer begins to come to a close don’t get the blues, there is still plenty going on in Oceanside! With exciting events ranging from the FM 94.9 Indie Jam concert, to the family-friendly Oceanside Harbor Days, to the 88th annual Labor Day Pier Swim, and many more in-between, Oceanside is the perfect place to send off the summer with a bang! What: Celebrate the thriving arts and culture scene in the heart of downtown Oceanside. The First Friday: Oceanside Art Walk will showcase live performances, music, poetry, art education, and culinary and pop-up art galleries showcased in over 20 venues in the downtown Oceanside Cultural District. Admission to all venues is free and open to the public. This month’s Art Walk will be celebrating an artistic labor of love theme! “Labor Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the economic and social contributions of workers to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country. This month’s Art Walk certainly embodies those principals with what it contributes to the local Oceanside community and reflects the deep Love our artists have for their Labor” – Susan Brown, president of the Oceanside Friends of the Arts.

What: The Oceanside Labor Day Pier Swim is an annual event celebrated by athletes from all over California to help raise money for the Oceanside Swim Club. The entry fee on the day of is $60 and includes refreshments, electronic timing, swim cap, and t-shirt (if available). The first wave of swimmers will begin at 8:30am. Register here!

What: Come to Oceanside’s South O’ Elementary School to enjoy a FREE family friendly concert. On Friday, September 8th the Steamers will be performing from 6-8pm with the pre-show beginning at 5pm.

What: FM 94.9 will once again be hosting their annual Indie Jam alongside the beach at the Junior Seau Oceanside Pier Amphitheatre. This fun event brings people from all around San Diego County to experience great music just feet away from the beach sand. This year the lineup includes Portugal. The Man, MisterWives, Sir Sly, Dreamers, Magic Giant, and The Wrecks. Tickets are available now, with general admission for $30 and VIP admission for $55. Tickets can be purchased at Indie Jam 2017 Tickets.

What: The 21st Annual Surf for the Sea is a commemorative surfing event in loving memory of the local surfers and family of Surf for the Sea who have passed away. Proceeds go toward the Surfrider Foundation, San Diego Chapter in their quest to protect our coast, ocean, waves and beaches. The entry fee is $50 for amateur and $100 for the Pro Division. All competitors receive an event T-shirt, lunch catered by local Oceanside restaurant Johnny Manana’s, and a chance at the opportunity raffle including surfboards, wetsuits, and great prizes provided by the surfing industry. Surf for the Sea also includes a Beach Clean-Up that ties into the theme of environmental awareness.

What: The largest North San Diego County event commemorating Mexican Independence Day is back! The 13th annual Noche Mexicana event will begin with a Color Guard by the Oceanside Fire Department in honor of the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance, followed by a moment of silence. This event will include performances by Ballet Folklorico Tapatio de Oceanside, Mariachi Juvenil de San Diego, and other local Latino bands, singers and dancers. In addition to the dance and musical entertainment, there will also be a special presentation by nationally syndicated cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz (“La Cucaracha”), exhibitions by SoCal Pro Wrestling, a line of classic cars from Por Siempre Car Club, free activities for the children, various food, artisan, retail and informational booths, and more. The event will close with a representative from the Mexican Consulate, who will present a re-enactment of the Grito de Dolores (“Cry for Independence”).

What: The locally organized South O Walkabout is a monthly walking event that showcases the beach community and its’ unique shops and restaurants. This monthly event will be encouraging walkers to discover the unique shopping and dining experiences offered in South Oceanside so come eat, drink, shop, and Walk!
When: Wednesday, September 13th, 5-8pm
Where: South Oceanside; The Walkabout footprint starts at Urge Gastropub and extends north to the Privateer on Whaley St. The easy walk is about .4 miles each way.

What: All are invited to Oceanside Harbor on September 16-17 for the annual Oceanside Harbor Days celebration. This free event will feature two days filled with sun, sand, surf, exhibits, and activities for the entire family. There will also be arts, crafts and food booths, Military and public safety displays, the annual Nail ‘n’ Sail Competition, Pirate Village, and more.

What: Tiki swimmers begin their adventure with a mass start that takes them out and around the City of Oceanside’s iconic fishing pier. Once past the pier swimmers turn north for a fast and straight swim towards the Oceanside Harbor, where half way into the 2.4 course, the 1.2 mile swimmers will merge onto the same course following their own mass start from the Harbor Beach. The TikiSwim is the only time swimmers can legally swim through the Oceanside Harbor mouth and once inside the Oceanside Small Craft Harbor, the Tiki swimmers will enjoy the calm protected waters to turn on the afterburners for a true “finishing kick” finishing at the boat launch ramps.

What: Are you the ultimate endurance competitor or are interested in triathlons and looking for something a little different? Here’s your chance to test your skills against our country’s best men and women. The Camp Pendleton Semper Tri & Devil Dog Duathlon offers a variety of options to please any endurance athlete looking for a unique experience in the San Diego County area. This race is open to Marines and Civilians Ages 13 and Up. The triathlon course includes a 500 meter swim, a 30k bike ride, and a 5k run. The Duathlon course includes a 2k beach run, and a 30k bike ride that follows the same route as the triathlon. Register here!
