Oktober Beer Guide

Oceanside is fast becoming a craft beer destination. Nearly a dozen microbreweries will be open by the end of the year. In the overall hoppy forward San Diego beer scene, it’s nice to find some approachable alternatives here in town that emphasize enticing flavor profiles such as brews on tap at Bagby Beer Company, Barrel Republic and Belching Beaver Brewery. And with October being the month to celebrate all things beer around the world, now’s the perfect time to explore Oceanside’s craft brew options. There’s even a local Octoberfest Three Year Anniversary Party happening at Legacy Brewing on Saturday, October 22nd from 12pm to 11pm. Tickets are available for purchase at the brewery or online.

Barrel Republic Oceanside is the go to place in town for beer tasting because they have close to 50 self-serve taps to choose from. Customers are encouraged to sample away. To pair with the beers, Chef Michael Brown designed a pleasing menu of unpretentious small plates such as Bacon-wrapped Pork Belly, Mini Crabcake Bites and House Made Spicy Potato Chips. Delicious brew picks include:

Benchmark Oatmeal Stout:

An inviting rich creamy beer with chocolate-coffee flavors and low alcohol content.

Green Flash Passion Fruit Kicker:

This well-balanced American style wheat beer has strong floral and tropical flavors. This beer is made with layers of passion fruit and juice combined with wheat malt.

Ninkasi Ginger & Juice:

A complex Saison style beer that screams spicy fruit flavors with hints of real ginger.

Bagby Beer Company has a longstanding reputation for producing outstanding brews. The sprawling multi-story tasting room/restaurant on South Coast Hwy 101 is a popular hangout for locals and tourists alike. The menu focuses on American comfort food classics such as mac n cheese, pizzas and burgers. On the beer side, approachable options are:

Worker Bee:

This beer is actually brewed with local grapefruit honey making it slightly sweet with balanced citrus and malt flavors.

Tis the Saison:

A pale ale style beer that is light and refreshing with hints of fruit and ginger. This is a great summertime beer.

Mootown Philly:

A creamy dark brown beer that’s slightly sweet with coffee, chocolate and nutty flavors.

Belching Beaver Brewery just opened a new brewhouse and tasting room in East Oceanside near the intersection of Oceanside Blvd and College Blvd. From the outset, owner/backyard brewer Tom Vogel was passionate about producing not just good but great beer using top quality ingredients. Non-hoppy standouts are:

The Me So Honey, Honey Wheat Ale:

This ale really does taste like honey and is made from wildflowers and cloves. It’s smooth and light with a broad appeal.

Peanut Butter Milk Stout:

If you are a Reese’s peanut butter lover than this beer is for you. This award winning stout has a creamy body paired with chocolaty, roasted peanut aromas.

Viva La Beaver Mexican Chocolate Milk Stout:

This beer is the Peanut Butter Milk Stout with a Mexican twist. Abuelita (Mexican chocolate) is added in for even more deliciousness in a glass.
